Overview
The Commission on Colleges
of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is
the regional accrediting body for West Kentucky Community &
Technical College (WKCTC). "At the heart of the Commission's
philosophy of accreditation, the concept of quality enhancement
presumes each member institution to be engaged in an ongoing
program of improvement and be able to demonstrate how well it
fulfills its stated mission" (p.1).
As part of its regular reaffirmation,
WKCTC has developed a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), Focus
on Reading, which is designed to establish and enhance a culture
of reading at WKCTC. The College believes, and the research
literature supports, by focusing on reading, students will be
able to better comprehend the written word, use their knowledge
to make decisions and achieve specific academic and professional
skills, and become more productive and informed members of society.
The QEP includes three main
objectives to enhance the culture of reading of the WKCTC community:
- To provide professional development training for faculty
to better assist students in enhancing their reading comprehension
abilities;
- To allow faculty, staff, and students to be surrounded by
enhanced reading opportunities and activities to promote reading
and increase reading involvement, both in the classroom and
their everyday lives; and
- To support literacy among students, faculty, and staff by
enhancing the reading environment and literary assets of WKCTC.
