One Book, One
Campus, One Community - Rocket Boys
A rocket won't fly unless somebody lights the fuse.
Homer Hickam, Rocket Boys: A Memoir
On
October 24, 2008, author Homer Hickam will visit Paducah,
Kentucky, making several presentations to student, faculty,
staff, library patrons, and community members. This
visit will be the culminating event of a semester-long activity,
in which West Kentucky Community and Technical College will
be first-time participants in a “One Book, One Campus,
One Community” read. The book Rocket Boys,
which inspired the film October Sky, was chosen by
the college to be the focus of the 2008 “read.”
To
celebrate Hickam’s visit and the opportunity for so
many to share in one common reading experience, the college
has several exciting and unique activities planned. Anyone
interested in participating in the semester-long project will
be able to find several different ways to get involved. For more
information about Homer Hickam and One Book, One Campus, One
Community events, please go to http://www.westkentucky.kctcs.edu/onebook/schedule.shtml.
Obviously,
the most important way to be a participant is to, first, read
the book and learn a bit more about the author. However,
before you sit down with your copy of Rocket Boys,
please take a few moments to visit some of these links and
become more familiar with Hickam, his life, and his work.
